Today marks my one week anniversary since I got Geneva, this week has been quiet a growing and learning experience for me.  From easy tasks such as getting a phone and bus passes to challenging ones such as figuring out the right bus routes, I learn something new each day. Geneva, from my perspective is a busy city bustling with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Almost everyone in this city speaks French but the most amazing thing about this is that majority of the population knows english as well. This compels anyone living here to speak French even if it’s not grammatically right. On my way to school on  Wednesday, I ordered breakfast in French. I was nervous but the lady at the Migros takeaway place was also helpful. Our dialogue went something like this :

  • Women: Bonjour, Ca Va?
  • Me: Bien Merci, et vous?
  • Woman: Ca va! Quest-que tu voudrais?
  • Me: Je voudrais la crossiant et la jus de pomme
  • Woman: Combien?
  • Me: Un

It isn’t all that perfect but it shows progress and willingness to learn and I am proud of that. Furthermore, I have to talk about a restaurant ( We named it: The Spot) Effay and I came across while looking for her Catholic church (L’eglaise de Catholic) the first Saturday 2/20. Their main dish is grilled chicken (Poulet) and it comes with two sides (Salad and Baked Potato Wedges). Amazing dish I wish I could smell it but you can’t because you would have to experience it for your self (It’s just indescribable). On Thursday 2/25 we made plans to meet at The Spot for dinner as we planned our weekend trip to Bern and Zürich. This marks the beginning of another adventure….

Lesson Learned: Challenge yourself to accomplish something great, believe in yourself and always say, Yes I can (Oui je peux)!

Arrived in Geneva, Switzerland at 7:23am. It was a long plane ride but overall a fun one because I watched a lot of interesting T.V. shows and movies. I couldn’t sleep because of the turbulence but apart from that everything seemed fine. Upon arrival I was warmly welcomed by Uncle with whom I will be staying. I looked around and realized that it was real, I was in a different country and that the place I call home is miles and miles away. Immediately I felt home sick wondering when May 8, 2010 will come so I can leave.  My overall impression of the first day was mixed because a part of me wanted to be strong, and ready for the challenges that lies ahead. On the contrary, the other half wanted to just throw in the towel and quit. I didn’t know what to do but it felt right that I was meant to be in Geneva at this time.

Lesson Learnt: Keep a positive outlook on the future even if your current situation does not seem favorable.

In All things…

Preparing for a study abroad trip can be very stressful, but in all things give thanks and learn to appreciate whatever adventure life brings your way. From filling  paper works, finding financial support and looking for the right person to go to can sometimes get overwhelming but my advice to all my readers is take this process one day at a time and step-by-step.  Whatever that happens at any point of  your vivid preparation count it a blessing and see it as an opportunity that will turn things around for the better.
